How early repair-list clarification, pre-ordered steel and agreed hot-work permits compress a special survey docking by up to a third.
The cost is in the waiting, not the welding
On most special survey dockings, the productive work occupies far less of the calendar than the coordination around it. Waiting for material, waiting for a surveyor, waiting for gas-free certificates — those hours accumulate quietly and become the overrun.
The single most effective countermeasure is an early, clarified repair list. When the yard understands the intent behind each item four weeks out, steel can be ordered to size and staged before the vessel enters the dock.
Sequence steel and coating as one plan
Steel renewal and coating compete for the same surfaces. Treating them as one sequence — cropping first, blasting in zones that are already closed out, coating in weather windows — avoids re-blasting completed areas.
This is where daily progress reporting earns its keep: when the owner sees a zone closed, the coating crew can be released to it the same shift.
Agree class attendance in advance
Thickness measurement, tank inspections and testing all need the surveyor present. Booking attendance against a realistic sequence, rather than calling for it when work is already complete, removes the most common single cause of idle days.
